Featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Lake Effect Diner is one of Buffalo’s Best Eateries!
Along 3165 Main St, Buffalo, NY 14214 is a classic-looking stainless steel car-style diner called Lake Effect Diner. It was recommended to me by a co-worker when speaking about our mutual appreciation of potato cakes, so about 2 years ago I tried Lake Effect for the first time, and now my husband and I are fixtures at this place. And yes, the potato cakes are worth the trip, and even a few others after that.
As mentioned, Lake Effect Diner was a featured restaurant on the fabulous and mouth watering Food Network show, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri. Rightfully so! Lake Effect isn’t’ an ordinary diner with greasy breakfast food, hamburgers, or any other fare you can make reasonably well at home. Lake Effects incredible menu features everyday items made exceptionally well.
Not only have I come back for the Traditional Potato Cakes, but Lake Effect has a comparably extensive vegan options for their sized menu. The Vegan Wrap is a massive portion and very filling, the Vegan Burger is homemade and while a little hard to manage, the flavor profile can’t be beat, and the Hummus Dip is a great appetizer served with soft, house-toasted pita bread.
While I’ve enjoyed every vegan selection at Lake Effect Diner, I can’t stay away from the Vegetarian items. That would include the Grilled Pita, served with perfectly steamed broccoli, fresh chopped tomatoes, and strong feta cheese, pictured to the side. There is also the Italiano 3 Egg Omelet (the eggs are from Kreher Farms, a local and hormone free farm in Clarence NY) that is brimming with veggies, my husband is a fan of their pancakes (only because I’m not much of a pancake person and he is) which is very tasty and super-sized to boot. And as I’ve recently discovered, the fried egg sandwich is also an exceptional vegetarian choice: a generous bun topped with a beautifully fried egg and a cheese of your choosing. I’ve never had such a fancy or delicious egg sandwich in my life, and probably not in yours either!
Lake Effect Diner has daily specials, but as they often involve some type of meat, I haven’t tried any. They have homemade soups, freshly squeezed orange juice, their own blend of roasted coffee from McCullagh Coffee Roasters here in Buffalo, NY. And man does Lake Effect Diner make a mean milkshake! I’ve had both the regularly made milkshakes and their low fat shakes: you seriously cannot go wrong either way; both methods have merit.
Because it’s a car diner, seating is limited. They do well with the space given, but there are about 9 booths and a long string of bar stools at the counter. If you hit it at the right times on a weekday, you should be sat immediately, but just about any time on a Saturday or Sunday, you may have to wait for a seat. Don’t be discouraged because the food is actually worth waiting around for.
If you’re missing Americana, go to Lake Effect Diner. The staff is great, the food is outstanding, the ambience is classic, and you’ll leave with a smile on your face!
